PARRY I WAS GLAD

ELGAR GREAT IS THE LORD

BEETHOVEN SYMPHONY No 9 'THE CHORAL'

Beethoven's Choral Symphony is the Everest of symphonies. It has the scale of the Eroica, the conflict triumphantly resolved of the Fifth, the forceful humour of the Seventh, and the tenderness and grace of the Sixth. All these threads are hear combined on a new level of experience. Beethoven was deaf, but this man could still demand a choir to sing rapturously of Joy.

The remaining works in this programme encapsulate the English musical renaissance. I was glad has been sung at every Coronation since 1902 and is matched by the regal opulence of Elgar's Great is the Lord.

BRAHMS ACADEMIC FESTIVAL OVERTURE

KHACHATURIAN ADAGIO FROM SPARTACUS

COPLAND RODEO

SHOSTAKOVICH SYMPHONY No 5

Our summer concert opens with one of Brahms' most popular overtures, which he himself described as "full of laughter". This overture is also full of German student songs, culminating with the well-known Gaudeamus Igitur on full orchestra - making a noble and exciting ending.

Two famous ballet works follow: the Adagio from Spartacus became a household favourite after its use in The Onedin Line and 200: A Space Odyssey, and Rodeo was used for Beef: It is What's For Dinner! Be that as it may, the Adagio touches the heart of every listener even though we cannot see the love scene of the ballet: and Rodeo evokes the scenes and sounds of the old West - here are the syncopated rhythms of jazz but not the sounds of jazz. This music is full of exuberance and expression.

Shostakovich's Fifth is the composer's most popular symphony. Audience and critics were highly enthusiastic after its first performance in 1939. As the composer wrote, the Finale portrays "the optimism and joy of living".
