GRIEG "Peer Gynt" Suite No 1

DOHNANYI Konzertstuck for Cello
with Colin Jackson

DVORAK Symphony No 8

Here is a colourful opening to our season: Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite begins with the magic of Morning, universally known and loved, and representing for us so beautifully the rising of the sun. The Suite concludes with an equally well known movement, In the Hall of the Mountain King, which origianlly accompanied the frenzied dancing of some nasty trolls.

Dvorak's Eighth Symphony sounds as Czech as it possibly can. As soloist for the Dohnanyi we welcome Colin Jackson, who has worked in the Royal Opera House Orchestra for many years and has sat as principal cello for many of their productions.

DELIUS A Song before Sunrise

MENDELSSOHN Violin Concerto
with Robin Morrish

BEETHOVEN Symphony No 7

Beethoven's 7th symphony is full of rhythmic exuberance and the Finale is nothing less than riotous. But our programme opens with a quintessentially English sound. The beauty of nature is epitomised in both of the short Delius works we are playing.

Robin Morrish makes a very welcome return to perform the best loved and most frequently performed of all violin concertos. The first movement opens with a passionate violin solo; the second has a tender lyrical melody, but an agitated middle section, and the Finale is full of brilliant fireworks.

BERLIOZ Hungarian (Radoczy) March

NIELSEN Symphony No 3

Our summer concert opens with the Prelude to a Fawn's Afternoon, the first important work of Debussy's maturity. It is an orchestral piece of pastoral character, as the fawn lies half asleep on a warm drowsy summer afternoon. Ravel was a great master of the orchestra, and the French theme continues in his characterful dances.

The Radoczy March was a stunning success at its first performance in Budapest in 1846 and has remained an audience favourite ever since. To conclude, The Old Barn Orchestra tackle Nielsen's mighty Sinfonia Espansiva. The quieter movements are amazing, and the outer movements are full of immense drive and colossal energy.
