MENDELSSOHN HEBRIDES OVERTURE VAUGHAN WILLIAMS THE LARK ASCENDING DVORAK ROMANCE
with solo violinist ROBIN WILSON
MENDELSSOHN SCOTTISH SYMPHONY
On his Grand Tour of Europe, Mendelssohn visited Fingal's
Cave on the Scottish isle of Staffa. He was so inspired that he immediately
scribbled down the opening theme of this evening's overture. The finished
work captures the atmosphere of that Hebridean spot so wonderfully. Over
the following two years Mendelssohn also completed his Third Symphony,
which evokes the character of Scotland in a warm romantic idiom. To complete
our spring programme, Robin Wilson will play two gentle works with orchestra:
the ever-popular Lark Ascending, a pertinent work for these times as
mankind learns to have more respect for nature again, and Dvorak's beautiful
Romance,
a short work full of pure atmosphere and fragile calm.

BEETHOVEN EMPEROR CONCERTO
with solo pianist STEPHEN DANDRIDGE
Rossini overtures are always full of zest and bubble
and the Silken Ladder is no exception. A bright symphony follows, composed
in less than a fortnight. Two very English works are included in our
summer programme, performed in suitably rural surroundings looking
down onto the Lower Weald. The majestic power of Beethoven's Emperor
Concerto will be a fitting finale to this Gala Evening,
played by a pianist well-known for his Beethoven interpretations.
